In a bold move to transform the federal bureaucracy, former President Donald Trump has announced plans to create a new agency known as the Department of Government Efficiency. The goal of this department, Trump says, will be to tackle inefficiency, reduce unnecessary spending, and ensure that taxpayer dollars are used as effectively as possible. The department will increase efficiency by paying a whole department full of high-level civil servants, and house them in lavish offices scattered all over the state capital.
The irony of naming an agency Department of Government Efficiency (or DOGE for short) was not lost either. DOGE is a crypto currency that one of the agency heads Elon Musk is said to have some level of control or interest in. A “meme coin” none the less. Is this a pre-cursor to something else? A joke? Inquiring minds want to know!
The Trumpster, who has long championed a smaller and leaner government and a reduction in what he sees as federal waste, outlined the purpose of the department in a recent speech. “For too long, Washington has been a bloated machine, taking more and giving less,” he stated. “We’re going to change that. This new department is going to cut the red tape, stop the waste, and hold everyone accountable. And we’ll spare no excuse doing it”
WHAT WILL THE DEPARTMENT OF GOVERNMENT EFFICIENCY (DOGE) DO?
The Department of Government Efficiency would operate with a mandate to audit federal agencies, identify redundancies, and recommend cuts to programs deemed ineffective. According to Trump, it will work closely with departments across the government to create streamlined processes and eliminate outdated protocols. Additionally, it will focus on modernizing technology within federal agencies to reduce paperwork and administrative backlogs.
Redundancy Reduction: A key priority is to identify programs that overlap in purpose. In particular, the department will target agencies with similar goals but duplicative functions, recommending consolidation where feasible.
Technology Modernization: The Department of Government Efficiency will advocate for updated technology, helping agencies digitize records, streamline communication, and improve data management. The goal is to cut down on physical paperwork and move toward centralized digital systems.
